A Welcome Message From The League Coordinator

Welcome to all new teams and members, new curlers and all our returning curlers. While a few faces are familiar, new teams this year include:

  • Thompson rink (Sharon Thompson, Joe MacDonald, Jen Immerson and Ken Immerson)

  • Bradbury rink (Eric Bradbury, Julie Johnson, Richard Davis and Charlotte Davis)

  • Fransky rink (Eric Fransky, Sandra Lusk, Steve Hall and Janet Hall), and

  • Richardson rink (Greg Richardson, Jennifer Quaile, Rob Kanasy and Cynthia Czarnecki).

Welcome also Paul & Yvonne Cormier, and Art Ridgeway. If I have missed any other new members, welcome to you as well and my apologies for missing you.

League Arrangement

The Friday Mixed League consists of 20 teams. The season includes a total of 20 nights of league games and every team has 4 byes throughout the season. For scheduling purposes, the season is split into two rounds and game schedules are provided at the beginning of each round. Please provide bye requests for Round 2 no later than the first week of December.

We are a social curling league and each team plays most of the other teams once throughout the entire curling season. In addition to the league games, there are two fun spiels during the second round, a Christmas party with a modest gift exchange, and a year-end banquet where the final standings for the year are announced and there are prizes for all who attend.

Speed of Play

All teams want to play 8 ends. Expeditious play is the solution.

With the exception of the skip rocks, all players should be in the hack with their rock cleaned and ready to throw the instant that their opponent’s rock comes to rest. Being quick at getting into the hack and cleaning your rock each member to see their opponent's rock finish. If everyone can reduce the time it takes to throw the lead, second and third rocks by five (5) seconds per rock, eight (8) minutes a game can be saved. That is the difference it makes to starting the 8th end or not.

There is no need to neatly store all the rocks after an end. Most curlers can read and count and can select their own rock from the pile. Simply push the rocks to their respective corners and let the lead throw the first rock. If you want to store the rocks in order, it can be done during the 20 seconds when the opponent’s rock is going down the sheet.

The Bell System

A bell system is in place to ensure the 9:15 games start on time. The bell sounds during the 7:05pm games at 8:50pm. All sheets are to be vacated by 9:05pm so the 9:15pm games can start on time. Once the bell sounds, teams complete the end that is in progress and do NOT start another end. As long as one rock is 'in play' the end is considered to be in progress. To be ‘in play’, the rock must have been released from the players hand. There is no bell for the 9:15pm games (if one sounds, it can be ignored). All teams play the same number of early and late games.

Make Up Games and Practice Ice

The only ice available for make up games and practice time are Tuesday’s at 9:15pm. Also available this year is the 7pm draw on October 7th due to an extra night in schedule. Sheets must be reserved by filling in the sheet posted in the upstairs cloak room to ensure that the ice will be prepared for your game. Make up games can also be scheduled the nights of the Fun Spiels in Round 2 if necessary. Teams are encouraged to make up their games and avoid unnecessary defaults.

A Self-Funded League

The Friday Mixed League is self-funded and a social fee of $10 is collected from each member near the beginning of the season which helps subsidize the year end banquet. Tickets for the Christmas party will be available for purchase mid to late November and tickets for the year-end banquet will be available near the end of the season.

Also, the weekly 50/50 draw will be run again this year. Half the contributions of the 50/50 draw go to the draw winner each week and the other half of the contributions help subsidize the year-end banquet.

The 50/50 draw operates on the honour system. A bag containing the 50/50 tickets and envelopes for storing the money each week is kept behind the bar. The last team to buy tickets should count and split the money in half and place the monies in the envelopes provided. The winning ticket number should be written on the 50/50 winners sheet posted on the Friday Mixed board. Members not present when the ticket is drawn can then check the board the following week. If the weekly winner is not present when the ticket is drawn, the winner's envelope should be placed in the bag and can be claimed at the bar the following week.

50/50 winnings unclaimed by the end of the season will be re-drawn at the season-end banquet. Note: For accounting purposes, please ensure the 50/50 results each week is recorded in the file folder in the 50/50 bag.

Any player hogging a rock must pay the piggy 25 cents. There is a maximum of 2 rocks, or 50 cents. The piggy is stored with the 50/50 bag. All money raised from hogged rocks helps subsidize the year-end party.

CHCC Spares Policy

(a) A team shall include a minimum of two players from the original team.
(b) Any member of the Carleton Heights Curling Club may act as a spare for another team at any time as required.
(c) The spare must be playing in place of a paid member.
(d) A non-member may be invited into the Carleton Heights Curling Club to curl as a spare on three (3) occasions free of charge during a season. Following the three (3) free games, the individual will be required to obtain a club membership in order to curl in club leagues.
(e) A spare may only deliver stones in either the Lead or Second positions in the delivery rotation of the team. A spare may act as Skip or Vice-Skip while in the Lead or Second positions in the delivery rotation of the team.

Exceptions to (e) are permitted in the Friday Mixed League with the consent of the opposing team when the original member of the team cannot be reasonably expected to play in a higher team position. Please respect fellow members' strengths and limitations, as appropriate, for league play.

Good Curling

Please make the most of your membership by participating in the league events and supporting your curling club. I'm looking forward to a wonderful curling season with everyone. Good curling to all!
