Welcome back to all returning curlers and please welcome Luke Morton, Ron Ruffo, Eric Stinson and Bob Brault who have joined our league.

League Arrangement

Our league size will remain at 20 teams (we had to turn away six teams that expressed interest in joining our league).

We will continue with the format we used last year. There will be a total of three rounds of curling. The first two rounds will consist of 10 nights each and all teams will play 8 games and have 2 byes. The third round will consist of 5 nights and all teams will play 4 games and have 1 bye. Three teams will be promoted and demoted from each of the two divisions after each of the first two rounds. The last round will consist of 4 divisions of 5 teams. The teams will have been ranked based on last year’s final standings and subsequent promotions and demotions.

We can accommodate a limited number of bye requests on a first come first served basis prior to the first night of curling for each round.

9pm Bell

The bell ringing arrangement will be the same as last year.

As initiated last year the bell for the 5 pm games will sound at 6:40 pm. They are to vacate the ice no later than 6:55 pm. Our games will start at 7:05 pm. The bell will sound at 8:50 pm and all sheets are to be vacated by 9:05 pm and the next games will start at 9:15 pm.

Once the bell sounds teams complete the end that is in progress and will not start another end. As long as one rock is “in play” the end is considered to be in progress. To be “in play” the rock must have been released from the player’s hand.

Speed of Play

All teams want to play 8 ends. Expeditious play is the solution.

With the exception of the skip rocks, all players should be in the hack with their rock cleaned and ready to throw the instant that their opponent’s rock comes to rest. If you can reduce the time it takes to throw the lead, second and third rocks by five (5) seconds per rock you will save eight (8) minutes a game. That is usually the differential between starting and not starting the 8th end before the bell sounds.

There is no need to neatly store all the rocks after an end. Most curlers can read and count and can select their own rock from the pile. Simply push the rocks to their respective corners and let the lead throw the first rock. If you want to neatly store the rocks in a specific order it can be done during the 20 seconds when the opponent’s rock is going down the sheet.

Make up games

At the moment the only ice available for make up games will be Tuesday at 9 pm. Sheets must be reserved by filling in the sheet posted in the upstairs cloak room. This puts an even bigger onus on all teams to try and play all games as scheduled to avoid the possibility of defaults.

50-50 Draw

A 50-50 Draw ill be conducted again this year. Weekly contributions from the Monday Night Open League will be combined with weekly contributions from the Thursday Night Open League and a draw will be made Thursday night after the 9 pm draw.

Half the contributions will go to the draw winner and half the contributions will go to a fund to subsidize the end of the year party and prizes.

Spares Policy

(a) A team shall include a minimum of two players from the original team.
(b) Any member of the Carleton Heights Curling Club may act as a spare for another team at any time as required.
(c) The spare must be playing in place of a paid member.
(d) A non-member may be invited into the Carleton Heights Curling Club to curl as a spare on three (3) occasions free of charge during a season. Following the three (3) free games, the individual will be required to obtain a club membership in order to curl in club leagues.
(e) A spare may only deliver stones in either the Lead or Second positions in the delivery rotation of the team. A spare may act as Skip or Vice-Skip while in the Lead or Second positions in the delivery rotation of the team.

Please see the Spares List for a list of spares and curlers wishing to join a team.

Draw to the Button

Again this year we will measure and record a draw to the button. The draw to the button will be used as a tie breaker tool for determining placement in the standing (Please see Thursday Open procedures for details).  The measurements will be taken during the first few weeks of the schedule.

Good curling everyone.
